I. IMPORTANT SYLLABUS CORRECTIONS (8/18/99)
[Note: I have modified the schedule of classes and readings that appears
on my web-page so that it conforms to the following
corrections; hard-copy syllabi handed out the first week of classes will
not contain this information ....]
1. You will have noticed that I neglected to include the due-dates for the two papers on the syllabus that I handed out in class on Tuesday. Those dates are:
Paper 1 (Abelard and Heloise): due Tuesday October 5, 1999, in class
Paper 2 (Christine de Pisan): due Tuesday November 23, 1999,
in class
2. I have decided not to include the primary source readings for week 12 (November 2-4) in the reader. Rather, I will place the book from which the readings on marginal women in Florence derive on reserve in Jackson Library. The assignment for that week should thus read:
November 2-4
Secondary Source Reading: Women and Power,
149-187
Primary Source Readings:
Reserve: Brucker, The Society of Renaissance Florence, pp. 190-200 (document
numbers 88-92, on Prostitution),
260-261 (number 128, "the Enchantress"), 270-273 (number 132, "A Witch's
Career")
3. Since I am putting Brucker's book on reserve, I will also give you an optional assignment for week 14 (November 16-18). You already have sufficient reading for that week, but if you are interested in the marriage practice of Italian noble families (which I will discuss in lecture on Nov. 14), you might well wish to consult Brucker, pp. 29-41. Again, this is optional, but interesting, reading.
