CSC 656 - Fall 2019 - Assignments

The following assignments have been given, with due dates as shown:

  1. Assignment 0 – Due Monday, August 26 before class

  2. Assignment 1 – Due Wednesday, September 11 before class

  3. Assignment 2 – Due Wednesday, September 25 before class

Starting October 7, we are restructuring assignments for this class. There will be two types of assignments: Practice problems (for faster feedback and learning) and solo assignments (for assessment of the quality of your work). See below for more information.

Graded (Solo) Assignments

“Solo assignments” are to be done on your own, and will be graded as traditional assignments. Starting with Assignment 3 the number of problems assigned will be greatly reduced (to 3–4 problems per assignment), with other problems moved to “practice problems” that will receive faster feedback. There will be two practice problem sets assigned for each solo assignment, and each solo assignment will be due at midnight after discussion of the second practice problem set. This way you will have time to incorporate any issues that may be clarified by our discussion of practice problems.

  1. Solo Assignment 3 – Due Wednesday, October 23, before class

  2. Solo Assignment 4 – Due Wednesday, November 6, before class

  3. Solo Assignment 5 – Due Wednesday, December 4, before class

Practice Problem Assignments

Practice problems may be worked on with other students or with outside resources, but you must write up your own solutions. These will be reviewed for correctness and quality by other students (peer-review), but your grade will be based on completion and effort rather than correctness (don’t turn in sloppy work!). Submit in Canvas, as usual, but do not put your name on your submitted document. On the due date, solutions will be distributed for peer review, and we will go over a few (anonymously) as a class to discuss characteristics of high-quality solutions.
