Our objective:
The purpose of this website is to provide educators with a resource for finding sponge activities that are ready for use in their classrooms. We have provided some teacher-suggested activities and links to useful websites where you can find short activities that are already prepared. You will also find links to websites where you can create your own fillers. As with any classroom resource, you may need to make modifications to the activities to suit the needs of your students.
What are time filler activities?
Some refer to these as sponge activities, fillers, buffers or time consumers. Regardless of the name chosen to classify them, they are all short lessons that are used to utilize instructional time in an effective way. There are times when it is impossible to predict exactly how much time a planned lesson will take to complete. Thus, many teachers encounter times when five or ten minutes remain in class. Sponge, or filler, activities are prepared and ready for use at any given time. Time fillers might also be used as transitional or closure pieces.
Examples of time fillers:· Individual, group or partner activities
· Puzzles
· Worksheets
· Songs
· Trivia questions or games
· Reflection questions
We believe that an integral part of classroom management and quality instruction is effective use of time. With time filler activities, you can use that “extra” time effectively and maintain better overall classroom management. At the same time, you can provide your students with additional opportunities to learn and do something different.
