“UNCG has a saying ‘Find your way here.’ Well, I’ve found my spot here,” says Student Ambassador Juan Valle.
UNC Greensboro is well into the third week of Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrating and honoring the rich cultural heritage of the Hispanic/Latino community. This month is not only a time for reflecting on the immense contributions and achievements of Hispanic individuals but also an opportunity to share compelling stories that resonate with our community.
Spirits were ignited by the events hosted by the Office of Intercultural Engagement (OIE) and UNCG such as Café y Conversation and the Alianza Symposium.
Alianza is UNC Greensboro’s faculty and staff organization for Latinx/Hispanic issues, a gathering point for university employees who are interested in collaborating around issues that impact them and forming initiatives that enhance activity on campus related to their cultures and communities. The Alianza Symposium was established in 2013 and has just celebrated its tenth anniversary at UNCG.
This week brings the annual UNCG fall career fair for students from all majors to check out full-time, internship and graduate opportunities. As part of the Association of Latino Professionals (ALPFA) student group, Spanish-speaking students are encouraged to pick up an “Hablo Espanol” button to signify to employers that they are bilingual.
Another big event this week is the Tengo Talent – Talent Show on Thursday, September 28 in the EUC Auditorium. Students can show off their variety of talents to the study body. In collaboration with the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, the Heritage Language Learners program will also feature poetry. Additionally, before and after the show, patrons will be able to enjoy an art gallery and buy from small Latin-owned student businesses.
Our journey of storytelling continues next week by exploring the theme of cultural wellness and success. Join us for these upcoming sessions as we continue to explore, honor, and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
