UNC Greensboro Facilities Management held its annual employee recognition ceremony on June 27. The guest speaker this year was UNCG’s Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mike Jones. Mike drew an analogy between an athletic team and a university. While both have team players, both also rely on a support staff who help keep the team going.
Facilities nominated 53 of its staff in three awards categories – Customer Service, Safety, and Teamwork and Collaboration. Three individuals from first shift and three individuals from second and third shift were recognized via a double-blind vote for the tremendous value they provide to the University through their vigilant and dedicated work performance.
First Shift Nominees
The Customer Service Award went to Kurt Melvin for managing customer expectation and going above and beyond by continuing to coordinate a project while on vacation to meet the client’s needs.
Allison Tighe won the Safety Award identifying a dangerous situation involving a tree branch tangled with a power line. Tighe blocked off the location and notified her supervisor so the branch could be safely removed. Her quick action ensured her safety and the safety of others who walk through the area.
Mark Meadows took home an award for Collaboration and Teamwork. Meadows has consistently demonstrated an exceptional commitment to fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. He goes above and beyond to ensure that everyone is on the same page and working towards a common goal.
Second and Third Shift Nominees
Zach Russell was awarded for Customer Service. Russell will seek out tasks that need attention when his assigned work is complete. He is also attentive to the needs of his colleagues often assisting them outside of his own zone.
The Safety Award was given to Rebecca Jones for responding to a waste spill with her crew. Jones recognized some workflow improvements and worked with leadership in identifying the need for an updated procedure.
Zach Russell and Joseph Munday received the award for Collaboration and Teamwork for assisting in a major inventory task which required a monumental amount of manual labor. They went beyond the scope of their own duties to reduce the workload of their colleague by increasing productivity through their perspective.
The Employee Recognition Committee was proud to recognize all winners as standouts among the clearly dedicated and wonderful staff.
The ceremony was followed by a catered meal under the great oak tree outside the Ferguson building provided by the Employee Recognition Committee. Door prizes were awarded to winning ticket holders. Gift bags containing coupons and swag were generously contributed by our UNCG community, including the Marketing Department for Athletics, Men’s Basketball, Kaplan Center for Wellness, Elliot University Center, Alumni House, Bryan School of Business, Department of Admissions and Visitor’s Center, Career and Professional Development, 6-Tech, and the Office of Sponsored Programs.
