UNC Greensboro’s Division of Student Affairs has been recognized as one of the Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs for 2023.

This is the third consecutive year UNCG has received the honor and the university is one of 27 schools in the entire country to be recognized. It is also one of only three schools in the UNC system and one of just four North Carolina institutions to receive the honor. A full list of institutions can be found here.

UNCG’s Division of Student Affairs is highlighted for its diverse staff – 65% female and at least 30% ethnic minorities – along with its employee benefits such as continuing education and a flexible work schedule.

“UNCG is committed to issues of equity and inclusion and embodies a strong culture of care,” says Dr. Cathy Akens, vice chancellor for student affairs. “We are committed to creating an inclusive environment in Student Affairs where all staff feel valued and respected. We emphasize continued learning and professional development, so we are all best equipped to help our students succeed.”

Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs (PPWSA) is a national recognition from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and “Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.” It celebrates student affairs workplaces that are vibrant, diverse, supportive, and committed to staff work-life balance, professional development, and inclusive excellence.

Institutions are chosen based on data collected from a survey administered in December 2022. The survey collects information about the diversity of staff, salaries, support for professional growth, benefits provided, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which diversity and inclusion permeates aspects of various divisions of Student Affairs, including administrative structures, commitments, work environments, and staffing practices. More information on the survey can be found here.
