Movie Night at the Park Sensory Room Fundraiser

November 15 @ 4:00 pm 8:00 pm

This semester, students in the Department of Community and Therapeutic Recreation’s Inclusive Recreation class are gaining valuable experience as allies to marginalized groups in their community. Each student team has identified an injustice related to inclusive recreation within the Triad. They are collaborating with High Point City Lake Park and hosting a Movie Night at the park to raise funds for a sensory room at the park’s recreation center to better serve individuals on the autism spectrum.

They will show “Inside Out 2.”

Friday, November 15
4 – 8 p.m.
High Point City Lake Park meeting and event center
602 W. Main St.
Jamestown, NC 27282

The entry fee for the movie is either a sensory toy donation or a cash contribution. The team already has several community donations for the sensory room, including bean bag chairs. Organizations such as A Special Blend and Victory Junction Camp will be at the event.

Other team projects include:
• Collecting equipment and money for a recreation center in a low-income neighborhood to support young athletes in need.
• Identifying inaccessible public recreation facilities and raising funds to improve accessibility.
• Partnering with Industries for the Blind to create more accessible outdoor recreation facilities for individuals with visual impairments.
• Tabling at the Kaplan Center to teach users basic sign language related to recreation.
• Raising awareness about the impact of pay-to-play sports on young athletes from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
