Jennifer Toller Erausquin

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

I am a social epidemiologist and self-professed data nerd. My passion for public health was ignited right after college, when I volunteered as a bilingual patient educator and medical assistant at a free family health clinic in Detroit, Michigan. Outside of work, you can often find me exploring local parks and trails or enjoying live music. I’ve been a long distance runner for over 25 years, and especially enjoy Spring and Fall half marathons.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Dr. Erausquin is a social epidemiologist whose research examines gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors as determinants of sexual and reproductive health, with an emphasis on HIV prevention and care engagement. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her MPH and PhD from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. She was a predoctoral fellow of the California Center for Population Research and the UCLA AIDS Research Training Program, receiving training in demography and epidemiology. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Duke Global Health Institute. Dr. Erausquin is a quantitative researcher with expertise in sampling hard-to-reach populations and analyzing large survey data sets, and a substantive expert in structural approaches to understand and eliminate health inequities. She co-edited a book, Global Perspectives on Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Across the Lifecourse (Springer, 2018), and since 2019 has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Primary Research Projects: 

1. Gender, Race, and HIV Care Engagement

My work in this domain examines factors that impede or promote initiation and continuation of appropriate HIV medical care among diverse women in the South. This work is collaborative with Dr. Courtney Caiola of the East Carolina University College of Nursing, PhD students Rachel Faller and Jennifer Bailey, partners in the North Carolina Division of Public Health’s Field Epidemiology Section, and a Community Advisory Board of advocates and women living with HIV. It involves secondary data analysis of existing data sources with information on HIV care engagement, and the development of NIH grant proposals to identify and address barriers to care.

2. Longitudinal Analysis of Social Determinants of Health 

In this domain, I work with team of faculty and students across institutions and disciplines to analyze data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a study that has followed a sample since 1994-5, when the respondents were in middle and high school. The team includes Dr. Michelle Martin Romero as well as Dr. Tom McCoy of the UNCG School of Nursing, Dr. Robin Bartlett of the University of Alabama, Dr. Eunhee Park of the University at Buffalo, and PhD student Rachel Faller. Our team investigates the ways in which experiences and social contexts during childhood and adolescence can impact later-life health outcomes. The research I lead on this team has examined racial-ethnic differences in suicide-related outcomes, and is expanding to include the role of adverse childhood experiences in the health of Latinx populations in middle adulthood
