Biography

Dr. Carole Ott is Director of Choral Activities at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her degrees include the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting from the University of Michigan where she studied with Jerry Blackstone. She also holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she was the inaugural recipient of the John Leman Award for Choral Excellence. While pursuing graduate studies at the University of Michigan, Dr. Ott received a double Grammy for her role in the preparation of William Bolcom’s The Songs of Innocence and of Experience

At UNCG, Dr. Ott directs the Chamber Singers, University Chorale, teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting as well as graduate seminars in choral music and free improvisation. Dr. Ott frequently appears as clinician and guest conductor regionally and nationally and is a recipient of The American Prize in choral conducting (College/University division). Recent research interests include free improvisation in the traditional concert setting, vocal chamber music, and the music of 18th century Brazil. In 2018, she was a Fulbright Scholar to São João del Rei, Brazil. An active soprano, she is a member of the flute/voice duo Anima Vox, an ensemble which specializes in seamless concert experiences and free improvisation.
