Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, M.A.

776

UNC Greensboro’s interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree is the only M.A. in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in the state of North Carolina. The master’s program balances feminist theory with practice, preparing students for immediate entry into professions or further academic study. Our graduates typically go on to advocacy, healthcare, education, or related professions in governmental or non-governmental agencies, or they enter Ph.D. programs.

PROGRAM DISTINCTIONS

Building upon UNCG’s historical mission as the Women’s College of North Carolina, we established one of the earliest Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies programs in the country.

Application

Students are admitted to the MA program in WGSS based on interest and academic achievement without regard to undergraduate major.  All applications must be submitted through The Graduate School’s online application system.

Prior to submitting your application, contact the Director of Graduate Studies to schedule an informal conversation. She can answer any questions you have, as well as give you additional insight into the WGSS MA program.

In addition to the standard information requested, you will also need to submit the following as part of your application:

Graduate School Requirements
  • Application processing fee (currently $65) WGSS cannot view your application or make an admission decision until your application is complete and the processing fee has been paid.
  • Official transcripts from prior colleges and universities.
  • Three recommendations from professors (preferred) or employers. WGSS strongly recommends that you request recommendations from professors, ones who can speak to your skills as a student and your preparation for graduate school.
WGSS Additional Requirements
  • A personal statement describing your preparation for graduate school and explaining how the WGSS MA program aligns with your academic and professional experiences and goals.
  • An academic writing sample, such as a research paper from an academic course. This should represent your best work and should be a substantial piece of writing. Ideally, it will deal directly with WGSS content and themes. It should also demonstrate your critical analytical skills and an ability to develop an argument.
  • An academic and professional CV (curriculum vitae) or résumé (only required if you are applying for an assistantship or other funding).

Priority deadline (to be considered for funding): February 1. May 15 for Fall Admission, October 1 for Spring Admission.

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Our 36-credit hour MA program balances feminist theory with practice, preparing students for immediate entry into professions or further academic study.  MA Students enroll in 9 credit hours of theory and analysis and, in consultation with the Graduate Adviser, develop a plan of study tailored to their goals and interests (21 credit hours).  Each student selects either a thesis or an internship as a culminating experience (6 credit hours).  Full-time students can complete the program in two years.

  • Courses offered by WGSS and other outstanding faculty across the university provide opportunities for students to engage in varied modes of inquiry on issues of local, national, and international importance.
  • The program offers internships in which students experience the “real world” built into coursework. This will allow for students to further their knowledge of the field outside of the classroom.

Coursework and independent study lead students to achieve the WGSS graduate programs’ learning objectives:

  1. Demonstrate interdisciplinary understanding of the ways that gender, race, culture, class, and sexuality function in society.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of power from historical, geopolitical, ethical, and psychological perspectives within global, national, and community contexts.
  3. Develop an understanding of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies as an intellectual and activist, disciplinary and anti-disciplinary presence within the university, and within local, national, and international communities.
  4. Develop varied modes of inquiry informed by the relationship between theory and practice, knowledge and action.

AFTER GRADUATION

Graduates of our program have careers in politics and law, social work, psychology, human relations, sports and recreation, sociology, administration, the arts, business, education, health sciences, media, and other fields.
