Middle Grades Education, B.S.

This program prepares future teachers for North Carolina licensure in Middle Grades (grades 6-9) including an essential understanding of Middle Grades’ students and schools; rigorous content-area knowledge; and exemplary teaching practice. Young adolescents are in a stage of great transition, making middle school an exciting and challenging place to be.

Program Distinctions

• This degree program follows the admission guidelines of the School of Education teacher programs. 
• UNCG has ranked in the top category of teacher education programs in the N.C. Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) rankings for three consecutive years.
• Accreditations and affiliations include Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).

The Student Experience

• There are opportunities for service in programs and centers serving local middle grades students, as well as workshops designed to strengthen each candidate’s understanding of and skill in mathematics teaching.
• Students have opportunities to partner with faculty on their academic research, in topics such as equity in science education; student culture/identity and learning; professional development in math education; educational psychology; sociocultural lens on learning; student belonging; teaching politics; and online education.
• Education students have access to the Student Educator Learning Factory (SELF) Studio, a unique makerspace designed to equip student teachers with knowledge of technologies like augmented reality and 3-D printing that they can incorporate into their classroom lesson plans. 
• Work is done in close collaboration with UNCG and public school faculty for a range of “theory into practice” experiences.
• Students are given access to the Teaching Resources Center (TRC), a model school library media center that supports School of Education students with a large collection including books, audiobooks, and DVDs; instructional materials; study guides; and equipment available to borrow.

After Graduation

• Upon completion of the program, students are confident and competent in mathematics teaching thanks to extensive field experiences in a variety of diverse school settings.
• Graduates are sought after by employers because of the close supervision and extensive field experience they received in their major and often assume leadership positions in their schools and state.
