UNCG’s online B.A. in Classical Studies, housed in the Department of Ancient Mediterranean Studies & Archaeology, explores the cultures, literature, and archaeology of the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean world with a focus on Greece and Rome.  

This fully online concentration prepares students for exciting job opportunities by creating a strong foundation in the humanities and cultivating a life-long intellectual curiosity and its related skills: oral and written communication, critical thinking, and information literacy.  

PROGRAM DISTINCTIONS 

  • Our faculty are regularly nominated for and win university teaching awards.  
  • We are a community of active teacher-scholars with established research programs who are committed to offering undergraduate research opportunities with faculty mentors. 
  • We offer faculty-led archaeological field schools in Greece and a summer study abroad program in Rome.  
  • UNCG’s Classical Studies B.A. is the largest such program in North Carolina that focuses exclusively on undergraduate education, and we are proud of the rigorous and supportive learning environment that we provide for our students. 
  • The Department regularly sponsors online and in-person lectures from leading scholars relating to the study of the Ancient Mediterranean world.  

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE 

  • This degree is offered completely online and asynchronously, which means there are no set class meeting times.  
  • You can complete the degree in four years (see a sample graduation plan here) but there is flexibility in this concentration to meet your specific timeframe 
  • You will receive a broad education in the ancient Mediterranean world by taking fascinating courses in such diverse areas as Greek mythology, Egyptian archaeology, Roman history, Greek civilization, and ancient warfare  
  • You will receive multiple opportunities to develop the skills that employers want most, such as oral and written communication, adaptability, critical thinking as well as creative thinking, and working with people from different backgrounds [Source

  • We are committed to providing you with personalized academic advising and career mentoring.   

AFTER GRADUATION 

  • Our students have gone on to graduate programs in such fields as Classical Studies/Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Archaeology, Geography, Social Work, Educational Leadership, Anthropology, and Public History at universities across the United States and the United Kingdom  
  • While many Classical Studies/Ancient Mediterranean Studies majors go into K-12 teaching or higher education, fully two-thirds of Classical Studies/Ancient Mediterranean Studies  majors nationwide are employed in fields outside of their major, including law, non-profits (including clergy), government, medicine, fine arts (including galleries and museums), knowledge creation and curation (includes research, publishing, libraries, and archives), computer science/tech, business, and financial services.  [Source
  • Classical Studies/Ancient Mediterranean Studies majors score higher on average on the LSAT than all but one other Humanities major and Classical Studies/Ancient Mediterranean Studies majors have the highest acceptance rate of all majors [Source
  • According to data collected by the American Association of Medical Colleges, Humanities major score higher on average on the MCAT than students in the Biological Sciences and they have a higher acceptance rate [Source]  
  • In the last 10 years our students have embarked on careers in education, technical recruiting, visual merchandising, financial management, instructional design, real estate law, and digital branding as well as with the US government and the military 
  • A degree in Classical Studies/Ancient Mediterranean Studies also contributes to a habit of lifelong learning and situates you to pursue personal study in many other disciplines and academic pursuits
