For more than 15 years, UNCG faculty and students have worked with the social justice organization Beloved Community Center, which takes its name from the “Beloved Community” Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of achieving through nonviolent dialogue and universal cooperation.


First Day Complete: Startin’ like a Spartan

Undergraduate students have a new option to skip lines and save money on their textbooks this school year. The “First Day Complete” program aims at easing some of the headaches that can hit students at the start of a semester, by automatically opting them in to have the bookstore prepare their course materials at a flat rate per credit hour.

Dr. Welsh wins Direct Selling Association Educator of the Year Award

The Founding Director of the Entrepreneurship Cross-Disciplinary Program has helped the Direct Selling Education Foundation reach 75,000 students. She has led professors in developing lectures and courses in sales, marketing, and entrepreneurship. She is one of two professors to be recognized by the Foundation this year for her tireless work.

The Department Chair for Specialized Education Services will help guide the future of education for students with special needs worldwide. His experience and commitment to inclusion led the Council of Exceptional Children’s Division of International Special Education and Services to make him editor of their flagship journal.


Alumna stars in Rhiannon Giddens’ opera at Spoleto Festival

When UNCG stars rise, they rise together. School of Music alumna and Grammy-winner Rhiannon Giddens launched an original opera, “Omar,” at Charleston’s Spoleto Festival, and Cheryse McLeod Lewis ’01 stars in the production. A current student, Michael Adams, sings in one of the choirs.


Alumni House celebrates 85 years

Since 1937, the Alumni House has been a gathering space for the UNCG community to celebrate accomplishments and milestones. All are invited to an ice cream social on June 9 for the House’s 85th birthday celebration.


Dr. Terri Shelton receives Distinguished Engaged Scholar Award

Dr. Terri Shelton

The Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement has made UNCG a pioneer in community-engaged scholarship work. She has incorporated those principals into more than 30 years of research and helped lead projects representing over $42 million. Chancellor Gilliam nominated her for the award from the Engagement Scholarship Consortium.
