UNC Greensboro’s Concert and Lecture Series (UCLS) continues in Spring 2024 with performances and showcases from award winning artists and musicians, including Jewel, Garth Fagan Dance, and Tim Warfield.
UCLS is the longest-running series of its kind in North Carolina and features both up and coming and world-renowned artists each year.
The School of Music’s annual Collage event kicked off the 2023-24 season in October, with performances from faculty and students. This was followed by Grammy-award winning jazz trumpeter and composer Chris Botti, the largest-selling American instrumental artist.

Jewel will also hold a masterclass with students at 5:15 p.m. on Friday, January 12 in the Tew Recital Hall.
Four-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Jewel will take the stage at UNCG for the first UCLS performance of 2024.
Growing up on an Alaskan homestead lacking indoor plumbing, Jewel learned to yodel from her father and formed a love for music and performing. She later moved to San Diego where she would do small gigs while living out of her car.
She eventually earned a recording contract and her 1995 debut album “Pieces of You” went on to become one of the best-selling debut albums of all time. The first three singles from the album, “Who Will Save Your Soul,” “You Were Meant for Me,” and “Foolish Games,” reached #11 and #2 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
Jewel has been featured on the cover of “Time” magazine, “Rolling Stone,” performed on “Saturday Night Live,” at the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, for the Pope, and for the President of the United States. She has experimented with several genres over her career with top hits in folk, pop, club, country, standards, children, and holiday music. She has ventured into writing and acting as well, publishing a book of poetry in 1998 and starring in Ang Lee’s 1999 western film “Ride with the Devil.” In 2021, she won the sixth season of FOX’s reality competition show “The Masked Singer” and released her most recent studio album “Freewheelin’ Woman” in 2022.

LALLA A. ESSAYDI

Visual artist Lalla A. Essaydi brings her work and unique perspective to the Weatherspoon Art Museum. Essaydi grew up in Morocco and much of her work returns to her Moroccan girlhood, looking back on it as an adult woman caught somewhere between past and present, and as an artist, exploring the language in which to “speak” from this uncertain space.
Her art combines Islamic calligraphy with representations of the female body to address the complex reality of Arab female identity from the unique perspective of personal experience.
Her work is represented in the collections of museums such as the Louvre, Paris; the British National Museum, London; and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Recently celebrating its 52nd anniversary, Garth Fagan Dance Company has been referred to as a 20th century dance treasure and is now in the “Archives of the Library of Congress.”
Garth Fagan Dance is rooted in African traditions, Caribbean stories, and the Black dance vocabulary Fagan Technique™. Garth Fagan Dance is founded by the man who taught more than a 100 million audience members to move as one global community through Disney’s “The Lion King” on Broadway. The dance company also features a UNCG alumna Daria “Toni” Clarke ’21.

The UNCG Jazz Ensemble joins saxophonist Tim Warfield for the final UCLS performance. Warfield has made several television appearances including on the “Today Show” and Ted Turner’s 1998 Trumpet Awards. He has appeared on several GRAMMY-nominated recordings such as Stefon Harris’ “The Grand Unification Theory,” as well as “Dear Louis” and “Sonic Trance,” both under the leadership of trumpeter and New Orleans native, Nicholas Payton.
