Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. has appointed Professor Wade Maki, Senior Lecturer, Department of Philosophy, as a Chancellor’s Fellow for Strategic Planning. Maki will retain his faculty appointment, continue to teach in the Philosophy department, and serve as chair of the UNC Faculty Assembly.

As a Chancellor’s Fellow, Maki will work with the Provost’s Office to help lead the implementation of the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP): Spartans Thrive, working collaboratively with the Division of Student Success and Student Affairs. The QEP is an integral component of UNCG’s 10-year Southern Association of Colleges and School Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) reaffirmation of accreditation process and is derived from an institution’s ongoing comprehensive planning and evaluation processes. It reflects and affirms a commitment to enhance overall institutional quality and effectiveness by focusing on an issue – in this case health and wellness – that the institution considers important to improving student learning outcomes and/or student success.

Maki will provide support for the overall oversight, development, and refinement of the QEP implementation, ensuring implementation is sustained through continuous input and participation from students, faculty, staff, and administration.

In addition, Maki will also work with the Chancellor and Provost’s Offices to begin developing a process to refresh the University’s Strategic Plan – Taking Giant Steps. This semester he will work with administration, faculty and staff (including Faculty and Staff Senates), and students to develop a process and timeline.

Maki brings to this role a wealth of leadership experience. As chair of the UNC Faculty Assembly, he worked with System Office, Provost, and faculty across the 16 UNC institutions to launch a Faculty Policy Initiative to update System policies regarding: Post Tenure Review, Faculty Workload, Faculty Retirement Incentive Program, Awards and Recognition, Evaluation of Teaching, and Teaching/Professional Track Faculty. He has chaired UNCG’s Athletics Strategic Plan Steering Committee; served as director of the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program; directed the Faculty Teaching and Learning Commons; served on the Faculty Senate; and currently serves as the UNC Faculty Assembly Chair. He also served on the Chancellor’s search committee among dozens of other university committees. Maki was awarded the Anna Maria Gove Award for Teaching Excellence in 2017.

He has a record of effectively working across various stakeholder groups, from faculty to the UNC Board of Governors, to build consensus to get things done.

Maki joins Dr. Andrea Hunter as a Chancellor’s Fellow. Dr. Hunter continues to do outstanding work as the Chancellor’s Fellow for Campus Climate.
