UNC Greensboro Facilities Operations nominated 47 of its staff for the three awards categories – Customer Service, Safety, and Teamwork and Collaboration. Four individuals from first shift and three individuals from second and third shift were recognized via a double-blind vote for the tremendous value they provide to the University through their vigilant and dedicated work performance.

Facilities held its annual employee recognition ceremony on June 15. The guest speaker this year was Professor and Dean Omar Ali of the Lloyd International Honors College, who spoke about how to create joy in the midst of work.

First Shift Nominees

Alton Brown and Silvia Benavides won the Customer Service Award. They were chosen for their attitude and work ethic in performing duties beyond their scope to ensure students and colleagues spaces they work were clean, neat, and well cared for.

The Safety Award went to Ben Kunka. Ben is recognized for ensuring safety of his colleagues by taking initiative to lock out a truck with a safety issue.

Sherrie Delk was presented with an award for Collaboration and Teamwork. Sherrie is recognized for her positive, supportive attitude in helping colleagues navigate important accounting issues they encounter.

Second and Third Shift Nominees

Sheffield Lawrence was awarded for Customer Service for his work ethic and stepping up to help a coworker in need when understaffed.

The Safety Award was given to Crystal Magallon for preventing a serious fire when she noticed smoke from a bag of rags while on break. She removed the items from the break room and hosed them down, preventing serious injury to coworkers and damage to the building.

Phillip Thomas received the award for Collaboration and Teamwork for work ethic and responsibility in a position where he was the only 3rd shift employee for a year. Phillip often worked late and acts as the key trainer for new employees.

The Employee Recognition Committee was proud to recognize all winners as standouts among the clearly dedicated and wonderful staff.

The ceremony was followed by a catered meal under the great oak tree outside the Ferguson building provided by the Employee Recognition Committee. Door prizes were awarded to winning ticket holders. Gift bags containing coupons and swag were generously contributed by our UNC Greensboro community, including the Kaplan Center for Wellness, Outdoor Adventures, the Athletics Marketing Team, Student Affairs, Office of Accessibility Resources & Services, Career Services Center, and Activities and Campus Events.
