The M.L.I.S. in Library and Information Science emphasizes the rapidly changing library and information field and prepares students for positions of leadership in school, public, special, and academic libraries and other information centers, and for a variety of roles in both public and private agencies as information specialists.

Program Distinctions

  • The online Master of Library and Information Science program is ranked among the best in the nation by US News & World Report.
  • The M.L.I.S. program is accredited by the American Library Association and is approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for the licensure of school library media personnel.
  • The school library media specialist program is approved by CAEP using the AASL/ALA professional education association guidelines.

The Student Experience

  • Program options include: Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS); MLIS with School Library Licensure; MLIS with Instructional Technology Licensure; or licensure-only options in school library, instructional technology, and school library supervision
  • The Library & Information Science program works with information organizations where their students reside to provide meaningful practicums and volunteer opportunities.
  • Courses are primarily synchronous and can be completed 100% online

After Graduation

  • With an MLIS there are the traditional paths of librarianship in public, academic, or K–12 school libraries, but there are also other exciting tracks in diverse settings open to information professionals.
  • In addition to the different job opportunities, MLIS students accumulate skills that include: archival management; database structure, evaluation, and utilization; information architecture; information resources management; instruction; social media; and web management.
  • As of 2020, the median professional librarian salary is $60,820, compared to $31,840 for library paraprofessionals.
