UNCG has welcomed a new class of 5,600 Spartans – undergraduate and graduate – and is helping them navigate campus to find their classes and introduce them to clubs, sports, and programs they can join to make new friends and forge their success.
Returning students will also find a few surprises, as UNCG introduces some changes in classes, recreation, and more.
Here’s what’s new at the G in 2024.
New at the helm
UNCG welcomes three interim deans and an interim provost, who will ensure a consistent, rewarding learning experience for all students.
- Senior Vice Provost Alan Boyette will serve as interim provost.
- Dr. Amy Adamson is Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Dr. Joy Bhadury is Interim Dean of the Bryan School of Business and Economics.
- Dr. Mitch Croatt is Interim Dean of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering.
- Dr. Sherine Obare, former Dean of JSNN, is now Vice Chancellor for the Office of Research and Engagement.
New in academics
In the College of Arts and Sciences:
- The Department of Classical Studies is now the Department of Ancient Mediterranean Studies & Archaeology and includes the Archaeology program.
- The Department of Sociology is now the Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Justice.
- B.S. in Statistics is in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.
- The minor in Jewish Studies is now part of the Department of History.
- The B.A. in Religious Studies is now a fully online degree option in the Liberal and Professional Studies Department.
- The M.S. in Informatics & Analytics is now part of the Computer Science Department.
In the Bryan School of Business in Economics:
- New certificates can be earned in cloud computing and security analytics and generative AI for business in the M.S. in IT and Management program.
- There is a new graduate certificate in marketing.
In the College of Visual and Performing Arts:
- The School of Art has a new animation studio.
In the School of Health and Human Sciences:
- A minor in genetic counseling is now available.
- Kinesiology has two new concentrations – sports medicine and movement science and exercise specialist.
- An online M.S. in sport and exercise psychology; an M.S. in clinical exercise physiology, and a PBC in mental skills for sports coaching is now offered.
New in Dining
Spartan Dining has opened three new locations in the EUC Food Court:
- Buffalo Wild Wings GO is your new go-to for wings on-the-go. Featuring all your favorite wings, sandwiches and more.
- CRAVE will feature three menu concepts: City MAC, P&C BBQ, and BonMI.
- Student Choice Kitchen: Your Voice, Your Menu.
Mark your calendars for the official Grand Opening of these new eateries on September 3.
New in Recreation
All regular season home games for all sports are free for students. UNCG Athletics have made Walker Parking Deck free, beginning one hour prior to game time for all regular season home games. Students also get free admission to regular season home basketball games at the Greensboro Coliseum. There is free parking on Gate City Boulevard and via shuttle beginning an hour and a half before tip-off.
New Locations
The Esports & Gaming Living Learning Community has moved to Grogan Residence Hall.
New Technology
Housing and Residential Life has installed ResNet WiFi Connection in all residence halls. This new network is for entertainment devices, including TVs, game consoles, smart lights, Firesticks, and wireless printers.
New splashes of color
- The Jackson Library has a new mural in the South Reading Room, painted by alumna Natalie Robinson ’23. It previews the redesign of the library, which will begin in 2025.
- The Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies added a new mural on the third floor of the Curry Building. It was created by Gina Franco, an artist who has painted many murals in the Triad area.
- The Weatherspoon Art Museum has undergone renovations to repaint and reconfigure some of the galleries, improving traffic flow and the overall experience for all visitors.
- The Spencers Residence Halls have all new student furniture, and Jefferson Suites and Tower Village have new furniture in the living room.
- Through the Green Fund, the Office of Sustainability added new Adirondack chairs outside the Quad and Moore Strong Hall.
