Focusing on Student Success

UNC Greensboro is tenaciously dedicated to student success and invests its resources in supporting student learning. That’s why we have a large number of tutoring and support initiatives. Here’s a look at some of the ways we support students and their success:

Division of Student Success

The Division of Student Success centralizes several tutoring and academic support programs designed to help students from all backgrounds realize their fullest academic and professional potential. Centers, programs, and services housed in the Division of Student Success include:

Academic Achievement Center

The Academic Achievement Center cultivates the development of critical thinking and active learning through personal collaborative exchanges between students, tutors, leaders and staff. The AAC offers the following services:

• Tutoring for many 100- and 200-level courses (small group, drop-in, and appointment-based sessions).
• Individualized academic skill development in areas such as time management, learning strategies, and more.
• Supplemental Instruction through peer-led facilitated review sessions.
• Outreach Workshops on Learning Skills.
• Proctored exam services through its University Proctoring Lab (UPL).

Academic Success Coaching Program (ASCP)

The Academic Success Coaching Program (ASCP) provides personalized first-year student support. It includes student referrals to resources that enhance student’s academic preparedness and reaches beyond issues of academics, placing its focus on holistic student development. 

The ASCP assists students in the development of life skills, promoting healthy, positive behaviors that better ensure student success throughout a student’s first year and beyond. The program fosters student effort and productivity, helping students set and achieve goals and make successful changes where needed in their academic and interpersonal lives.

GEAR UP

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a national initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education to prepare students to enter and succeed in college. At UNCG, GEAR UP provides academic coaching for students to achieve their academic and personal goals with the opportunity to build peer relationships and engage with campus activities and resources. Students selected for the GEAR UP program must be graduates from high schools that have partnered with GEAR UP.

Guarantee Scholars Program

The Guarantee Scholars Program is a holistic student success program dedicated to supporting and developing high-achieving students with significant financial need in all aspects of their college experience to ensure success. This program accepts up to 35 incoming first-year students each year and supports them for four years through a cohort model. 

Support provided includes specialized financial aid packages, peer mentorship to support college transition, academic advising, planning and skill building, leadership development, professional development and career coaching, financial literacy workshops, and more.

McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (TRiO-McNair)

The McNair program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for the pursuit of a Ph.D., with the goal to diversify faculty demographics across the United States. UNCG-McNair provides faculty mentors, training, research opportunities and more to a cohort of 25 students from diverse, underrepresented minority populations, including first-generation students with low or modest income, African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Alaskan native/American Indian and/or Pacific Islanders populations.

Student Support Services (TRiO-SSS)

TRIO-SSS is a federally-funded grant program through the U.S. Department of Education that provides a range of support to first-generation college students from modest-income backgrounds or students who are registered with OARS [link: oars.uncg.edu]. Unique support services include academic skill building in areas such as study strategies, note-taking, and time management; one-on-one tutoring in specific courses; individual personal and academic advising; and one-on-one financial literacy education coaching. SSS helps students find and stay on their academic path.

Departmental Tutoring and Academic Support Services

In addition to the programs listed above, UNCG also has an extensive support network through departmental support initiatives. These include:

Students enrolled in ACC 201, ACC 202, or FIN 315 can take advantage of departmental tutoring services supported by the ACF graduate students. For more information, please reach out to the Student Success Department.

Students enrolled in lower-level CSC courses can come to drop-in style departmental tutoring support. These tutors can assist with general programming and general system issues. For details about semester scheduled hours, see the computer science tutoring services page.

Students enrolled in ECO 201, ECO 202, or ECO 250 may be able to take advantage of free departmental tutoring support through the National Association for Business Economics (NABE). For more details, contact Ashley Peters at arpeter2@uncg.edu.

Students enrolled in ISM 110 are welcome to attend free drop-in departmental tutorial support during open lab hours. For more information about the schedule, students can consult the course syllabus, or contact Ms. Mary Catherine Chauvin at mcchauvi@uncg.edu.

Students enrolled in American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean or Spanish classes can attend departmental tutoring sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. For details, check out the language tutoring page.

The Math Help Center helps students in 100-300 level Mathematics and Statistics courses through drop-in and appointment-based tutoring. In-person drop-in tutoring from graduate students through the Math Help Center located in Curry 210. Online students can access this same support through the Canvas virtual tutoring organization. Tutors work with students on a first-come, first serve basis, with no appointment necessary.

Students enrolled in upper-level NUR courses can get access to course-based tutoring through faculty referral to the Academic Enhancement Office. This office also provides workshops on study skills, NCLEX preparation for seniors, advocacy services, and peer-led discussions called The Chat.

Other Academic Support

    Dean of Students’ SMART Planning:

    SMART Planning is an individualized process that assists students who may have had life circumstances or issues negatively affect their success at UNCG. SMART planning staff assists students in identifying barriers to success and steps for removing barriers.

    STAMPS (Science Technology and Math Preparation Scholars)

    STAMPS provides financial and community support for undergraduate students majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematical Sciences, Physics or Astronomy, and who demonstrate both significant promise in science/math and a measurable financial need. In addition to financial support, STAMPS provides peer mentors, a science colloquium series, tutoring, and field trips to research facilities.

    MARC-U-STAR (Maximizing Access to Research Careers- Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research):

    Students accepted to the MARC-U-STAR program will participate in activities designed to enhance their confidence, academic skills, and technical abilities.
