Political Science, B.A. Social Studies High School Teaching Licensure Concentration

428

The Political Science major focuses on the government, politics, and policies of the United States and other nations; levels of government within those nations; relationships among nations; and the political behavior, attitudes, and ideas of groups and individuals. Students receive personalized faculty advising every semester and most classes have fewer than 40 students.

The Secondary Social Studies Teacher Education program is for students majoring in anthropology, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology who wish to receive secondary (9-12) teaching licensure.

PROGRAM DISTINCTIONS

  • This program prepares students to be successful social studies teachers at the high school level.
  • Faculty members are nationally recognized scholars who are committed to undergraduate education.
  • Students regularly interact with faculty and explore and develop their own interests within the discipline.
  • The undergraduate political science curriculum offers a broad liberal arts education along with a comprehensive understanding of the nature and functioning of the political process, in addition to a sound foundation for graduate study or careers that require knowledge of governance and the political process.

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE

  • As part of the preparation for licensure, students spend 50 hours in internships during their junior year (25 hours per semester), another 50 hours during the fall semester of their senior year.
  • Students engage in full-time student teaching during the spring semester of their senior year.

AFTER GRADUATION

  • Graduates of approved teacher education curricula are eligible for initial licensure on the basis of UNC Greensboro’s recommendation to the State Department of Public Instruction.
