CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECT

Research Fellow at UNCG’s The Center for New North Carolinians

I am working on the collection, translation, and publication of Carolinian immigrant manuscripts, memoirs, and autobiographies as part of an illustrated anthology project involving Southern history collections, including the NC State Archives, the Moravian Archives, the North Carolina Collection at UNC, the Special Collections Library at Duke University, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives. The goal of the “Carolinian Immigrant Memory Project” is to trace, document and illuminate the historical and cultural experiences of new Carolinians from the colonial period to contemporary times. http://www.uncg.edu/~lixlpurc/CIMP/WebHeader.html

TEACHING

My classroom work aims toward making the study of German a challenging, exciting, and rewarding endeavor by stressing the interdisciplinary applications of language, literature, and culture studies. In general, my teaching focuses on all aspects of modern German civilization, including introductory and intermediate language courses, advanced conversation and composition courses, and special topic courses on German literature and cultural history from 1800 to the present. My pedagogy aims at solid standards of achievement and articulation with other colleges and universities in order to ensure that students can successfully complete their undergraduate degrees, and are well qualified to enter graduate programs or professional careers with meaningful credentials.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

Austrian born (Salzburg 1951) American citizen. After completing the Gymnasium in Salzburg, and the University of Vienna, I transferred to the University of Wisconsin at Stephens Point (UWSP) in 1974. Following my graduation with baccalaureate degrees in mathematics and German in 1976, I taught in secondary schools for one year. I continued my graduate studies at the UW-Madison, where I received a Ph.D. in modern German Literature and Culture in 1984. My first teaching job as Assistant Professor of German began at Wabash College, Indiana, where I taught a broad range of Liberal Arts courses. In 1987, I moved to Greensboro, NC, where I received tenure (1990), and was promoted to full professor in 1996. Since 1999, I have held an administrative assignment as Head of the Department of German Russian, Japanese, and Chinese Studies.
