CCI 205    Second Hourly Exam Questions

1.  One or more questions on the exam will be on Book 10 of the Odyssey.  You will need to be familiar with the episodes described in this book and the characters who appear in those episodes.  Be prepared to compare some aspects of Book 10 with Book 9.  What do we learn about Odysseus in those two books?  How are they similar or different?

2. Why is it necessary for Odysseus to visit the underworld?  What is the most important thing that he learns there?  What did the ancient Greeks believe the afterlife was like?

3.  There are very few women mentioned in the Iliad.  Among mortals, only Helen and Andromache (Hector's wife) have substantial speeches.  In contrast, there are many women in the Odyssey.   What do these women contribute to the story of Odysseus' heroism?  Are they important to the poem?  Why or why not?

4.   Consider the following themes in the Odyssey:
        Host-guest
        disguise and deception
        separation and reunion

5.  Compare the character of Odysseus in the Odyssey with his character in Sophocles' Philoctetes.  In what ways are they representations similar, and in what way different?
