Volunteer Information

The modern village of Mochlos is located just east of the Bay of Mirabello in eastern Crete. It is
accessible via two recently paved roads which descend from the main east/west highway on
the north coast. One begins at the modern village of Sphaka and the other begins at the entrance
to a large gypsum quarry (good luck finding the latter!). The modern village is located on the
southern or mainland side of the submerged isthmus across from the ancient site. The Artisans'
Quarter and LMIII chamber tombs are located on the outskirts of the modern village. Mochlos is
an isolated haven which in the last ten years has acquired amenities from running water to fax
machines.

Students, including undergraduates as well as graduate students, and scholars with professional expertise may apply to participate in the excavation by writing or e-mailing:

The project will be excavating in 2009 and 2010, but is also busy producing final publications, and graduate students interested in participating in the publication program are especially encouraged to apply.

Donations to the excavation are tax deductible if made through the University of North Carolina at Greensboro - Mochlos Project. Sponsors wishing to make donations are invited to visit the site for a personal tour by the Directors.
