INTERMEDIATE GREEK
OFFICE HOURS: WF 12-12:30; T 11-12, and by appointment.
TEXTS: Selections from Herodotus (Amy Barbour, ed.).
GOALS OF THE COURSE: The main goal of this course is to help you make the transition from beginning Greek to being able to read Greek literature. To that end, we will have an ongoing review of what you learned last year, and we’ll also learn some new grammar. Much of the focus this semester will be on getting the verbs down and on vocabulary building. Greek 203 is half way between Elementary Greek, in which the focus was on grammar and morphology, and reading courses, in which the focus is on reading Greek as literature. By the end of this course you must be able to:
1. read a passage from Herodotus with the aid of a lexicon
2. recognize quickly all forms of Greek nouns, pronouns, adjectives and verbs
3. write out from memory the principle parts of the most important irregular Greek verbs
4. describe the importance of Herodotus in Greek literature and European historiography
5. discuss the relationship between early Greek civilization and neighboring non-western cultures
6. be ready to start reading Homer in the spring
GRADES:
Grades will be determined as follows:
Big Quizzes | 15% |
Little Quizzes | 15% |
Principal Parts Quizzes | 10% |
Midterm Exams (3) | 30% |
Final Exam | 30% |
QUIZZES: There will be three types of quizzes—Big, Little, and Principal Part. The Big Quizzes will cover approximately two previous weeks of reading assignments and will be on the following dates (all Fridays): August 29, September 26, October 24, and November 21. Principal Parts Quizzes will be given on Mondays beginning August 25. The Little Quizzes will be given as needed. All quizzes will take place at the beginning of class. If you arrive late and we are still taking the quiz, you may take it but you must hand it in with everyone else. If you arrive after I have collected the quizzes, you will receive a zero. N.B. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP QUIZZES FOR ANY REASON; IF YOU MISS A QUIZ OF ANY SORT, YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO. I will drop your lowest Big Quiz grade, your lowest Little Quiz grade, and your lowest Principal Part Quiz grade when I figure your grade for the course.
MIDTERM EXAMS: We will have three midterm exams; the will be on September 12, October 10, and November 7 (all Fridays). Among other things midterms will cover the previous four weeks of reading.
ATTENDANCE: You need to be here to every day. If your attendance is poor, you and I will have to sit down together and discuss the advisability of your continuing in the course. If you miss more than 5 classes, I reserve the right to drop you from the course.
FINAL EXAM: The final exam will be on Wednesday, December 10 from noon to 3 p.m.
OTHER INFORMATION:
1. Please make sure you
have read and understood the Academic Integrity Policy (it can be found
at http://saf.dept.uncg.edu/studiscp/Honor.html). I will ask you
to sign the Academic Integrity Pledge on all graded work.
2. As far as homework is concerned, my standards are the same as those of the Bryan School of Business here at UNCG (found in the 2003-2004 Undergraduate Bulletin, p. 74):
In general, students should plan to devote between 2-3 hours outside of
class for each hour in class.
