Working Mission Statement (Spring 2013)

The library will take an activist role and promote the advancement of issues related to women, gender, equity and intersectionality through its services, advocacy efforts and educational programs. The department promotes the use of these materials by the University’s academic community, and the community at large. To that end the library’s mission is to:

  • Embrace alternative relationships to information through promoting transliteracy.
  • Create an inclusive learning environment, and "safer" space where a people with a multitude of identities (meaning everybody) can have equitable access to marginalized literature and cultural diversity resources.
  • Make visible the collective histories of underrepresented populations and the intersectionality of our communities' lived experiences.
  • Uplift our legacies of resilience in order to strengthen our present day social movements.

We will fulfill our mission by:

  • Providing improved access to existing materials
  • Valuing and fostering the collective intelligence generated by authentic conversations between diverse people working together
  • Ensuring access to the space and collection
  • “Cultivate community ties through collection development”
  • Counteracting traditional library practices that promote and amplify existing societal inequalities
  • Creating physical space that is welcoming and conducive to conversation, knowledge sharing, collaboration, and research
  • Utilizing departmental expertise in service and education provision

Current Objectives

  • Move an under-utilized departmental library into an integrated and circulating collection
  • Contribute to the visibility, sustainability, and effectiveness of such a collection
  • Collaborate with students, faculty/staff, community members, and alternative libraries doing comparable work in order to meet overall objective
  • Strengthen support for university diversity efforts
  • To support the retention of students from underrepresented groups
  • Enhance learning experience of all participating parties
  • Ensure everyone is able to participate and give insight to library happenings to create multidimensional products, and dialogue
  • Build athentic, intersectional community among WGS students, faculty, staff and interested community members
