INTERLINK: News and Announcements

INTERLINK students show off their certificates at the honors ceremony

Summer 2013 Session
On May 27, 2013, INTERLINK welcomed 25 new students for the start of its 9-week summer session. Representing 11 different countries, new students participated in 2 days of orientation activities on campus before joining the 80 returning students on May 29 for the first day of classes. To celebrate the beginning of the term, all INTERLINK students were invited to a welcome reception in Foust Park.

On June 24, 19 INTERLINK students were recognized at a special honors ceremony for having earned all A’s in their classes during the previous 9-week session (Spring 2). These students were congratulated by Dr. Brad Teague, INTERLINK’s director, and presented with a certificate.

The end-of-term ceremony for the summer session took place on July 26 in the Jackson Library Auditorium. Twenty students graduated from INTERLINK at the conclusion of the summer session, including fifteen students who have enrolled as degree-seeking students at UNCG this fall. Several awards were also given during the ceremony, including the “Outstanding Student” Award, “Perfect-Attendance” Awards, “Hardest-Working Student” Awards, and “Module Participation” Awards. We are very proud of our graduates and look forward to hearing about their continued successes!

New and returning students converse during an INTERLINK orientation session

Fall 1, 2013 Session
INTERLINK’s Fall 1, 2013 session began on August 12, 2013. We welcomed 46 new students (a record number!) from 9 different countries, and these students participated in 2 days of orientation activities on campus before beginning classes along with approximately 65 returning students on August 14. Many INTERLINK students celebrated the new term by attending the Chancellor’s International Welcome Reception, held on August 20 in the Elliott University Center’s Cone Ballroom.

INTERLINK Welcomes New Staff
INTERLINK has welcomed four new members to its staff since May. Stephanie Odom is the new Administrative Assistant, and Jenny Chalikian is the new Program Assistant. Stephanie grew up in Greensboro as a softball player and an active member of the JR ROTC team, and she brings an extensive customer-service and accounting background to the program. Jenny graduated from Guilford College with a BA in German and a minor in Religious Studies. During her time at Guilford, she studied abroad in Munich, Germany, where she developed a love for languages and travel.

Giovanna Alessio and Eddie McGee also joined the INTERLINK team as instructors. A California native, Giovanna has taught both English and German in Mexico and California. Since 1988, Eddie has taught English in Germany, Northern Virginia, China, Azerbaijan, Kentucky, and Ohio. In the summer of 2013, he returned to his home state of North Carolina to teach at INTERLINK.

Volunteer Opportunities at INTERLINK
Interested in volunteering for INTERLINK? Now that the fall semester is underway, INTERLINK is looking for conversation partners, tutors, and other volunteers. Working with international students in our program is a great way to learn more about another culture, form international friendships, and help INTERLINK students with their English. If you are interested in getting involved with our program, please contact us at interlink@uncg.edu or (336) 334-4700. Our office is located in 025 Foust. You can also check out INTERLINK’s Facebook page.

New Mind Education: New Mind joins Pamela Harrod on recruitment trip to China

The summer of 2013 proved to be both an exciting and productive time for New Mind Education. From late June through mid-July, New Mind was delighted to sponsor and join Pamela Harrod, Director of International Admissions at IPC, on a recruitment trip to China. Accompanied by Lauren Hudson, Program Director at New Mind, Pam traveled throughout many cities in China, including Tianjin, Hohhot, Zhengzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou, to meet with many prospective students interested in studying in the US. One of the first students recruited was Dan Wu, who has been conditionally admitted to UNCG and will begin studying at INTERLINK Language Center this October. She is very excited to be joining the UNCG community!

In Tianjin, Pam and New Mind Education representatives had the opportunity to meet with the Dean and other faculty members of the Law Department at Nankai University, one of the most prestigious universities in northern China, to discuss a potential collaboration between our two universities. The meeting was a promising step forward in continuing to grow the international population on UNCG's campus.

Overall, the trip was a huge success, and we are pleased to welcome 12 new students to the UNCG community. This is our largest cohort at UNCG yet, and we are looking forward to our program seeing further growth in the future.
